Using Action Learning techniques and ongoing research, the groups will strategise and network their way to greater diversity at all levels in in music education.

How The Advance Network Leadership Programme will work

There will be:

1. 5 set meetings over the course of a year with each meeting will last 3 hours
2. An experienced Action Learning Associate facilitating the set
3. A programme focused on personal leadership, organisational development and sector change
4. An engaged network of peers focused on music education, leadership and positive change
5. Sets will be held in central London venues, The Barbican and The Royal Academy of Music

There is a nominal investment of just £130.00 for the whole programme as these Leadership Development Groups have been generously funded by The National Federation of Youth Music.

Advance Network Taking Action Phase 2

Sowing the seeds of change… A unique opportunity for music education

What are we doing?
The Advance Network is committed to creating a truly diverse music education sector at all levels. In phase 1 we looked at:
Barriers BAME communities face in engaging with ensemble music-making and reaching excellence in the classical/ jazz sector.
Effective practices for overcoming these barriers and nurturing excellence in diverse communities.
Different ways engagement with diverse groups drives artistic excellence.
We are now offering a programme of professional development that will support a network of committed individuals to make the changes that will enhance their leadership, organisation or the sector by Taking Action on increasing diversity.

Who is this for?
Freelance musicians, experienced music leaders, policy makers, parents, emerging music leaders, educators, change agents, funders and anyone who wants music education to truly reflect our communities.

Specifically Individuals or organisations who:
Are already in the process of initiating change
Would like to take effective action and are looking for models of good practice
Understand the importance of sector-wide collaboration in creating sustainable change
Are at the vanguard of supporting leaders to innovate and build capacity
Have a strategic role in ensuring music education gives children and young people equal access to excellence in the arts.

How will it work?
There are 3 tiers of involvement in Phase 2 Advance Network, all of which will contribute to greater awareness of cultural diversity and inclusion in music education at all levels.

There are 3 levels to the the Taking Action Programme:

Level 1: Action Research Labs
Level 2: Action Learning Sets
Level 3: Research & Online Contribution

Level 1: Action Research Labs

What’s involved?

  •  Bespoke Strategic Workshop
  •  1:1 Consultancy
  •  Online Project Profile

What you receive:
The bespoke programme will give you the opportunity to:
1. Share current projects or new ideas around policy, practice, organisational change with a specially convened small group workshop.
2. Receive helpful feedback on your idea from the group.
3. Apply for 1:1 strategic overview and 3 consultancy support sessions between 2014 – 2015.
4. Network with like minded individuals.
5. A central London venue.

Investment and other information:

The bespoke workshop is for a maximum of 12 people only, in March/April from 12.00 – 5.00 pm.

Level 2: Action Learning Sets

What’s involved?

  •  Leadership development
  •  Organisational development
  •  Sector wide development

How will it work / what you will receive:
There will be 4 action learning sets, 3 in London and 1 outside London:
1. 5 set meetings over the course of a year with each meeting will last 3 hours
2. An experienced Action Learning Associate facilitating the set
3. A programme focussed on personal leadership, organisational development and sector change
4. An engaged network of peers focussed on music education, leadership and positive change
5. Sets will be held in Central London Venues, The Barbican and The Royal Academy of Music

Investment and other Information:

  • You will need to commit to 3 hours every 2 months
  • There will be a joining fee of £99.00 if booked by 17th February or £130.00.

Level 3: Research & Online Contribution

What’s involved?

  •  Live events
  •  Online gathering of resources via The Advance Network blog, Twitter…
  •  Academic Research conducted by Professor Graham Welch, Chair of Music Education, Institute of Education
